Quick Reference

1. Welcome to BudgetWise

BudgetWise is a personal finance management app designed to help you keep your everyday money records organized in one place. You can track accounts, record income and expenses, separate investments and transfers, create budgets, set savings goals, and review reports.

Core idea  BudgetWise works best when you record money consistently. Your dashboard, balances, budgets and reports become more useful as your records become more complete.

What you can do

2. Getting Started

Create or access your account

Open BudgetWise and use the available sign-up or sign-in method. The app supports email/password authentication and Google sign-in. If email verification is requested, complete it before trying to use a protected account.

Recommended first-time setup

  1. Sign in to BudgetWise.
  2. Open Accounts and add the accounts you actually use, such as Cash, your primary bank account, wallet or card.
  3. Enter the correct Initial Balance what you have actually, when creating each account (For example Cash: Initial balance 5000; HDFC Bank: Initial Balance 40000 etc).
  4. Choose one frequently used account as your Default Account.
  5. Review Manage Categories in Profile and make sure your common income and expense categories are available, if not then you can create new categories as per your requirements.
  6. Record a few recent transactions, then review Home and Reports to understand how your data is presented.
Important  When an existing account is edited, its balance is not manually editable. BudgetWise updates the balance through transactions so the money trail stays consistent.

3. Understanding the Home Dashboard

Home is the at-a-glance view of your finances. The current app places the most common actions and summaries on one screen.

Quick Actions

At the top of Home, use Quick Actions for adding a new transaction like - Income, Expense, Budget and Goals. You can also use Add with Voice for faster transaction entry.

Current Balance

Current Balance represents the combined balance used by the dashboard. Use the eye control to hide or reveal financial values when you want more privacy on screen.

Account Balance Distribution

The account balance chart helps you understand how your money is distributed across your active accounts.

Monthly Snapshot

The monthly snapshot summarizes the selected month's Income, Expense and Investment activity. Changing the month changes month-based activity and summaries; account balances remain cumulative.

Budget & Goal Summary

Budget Summary shows your budget progress and remaining amount. Goal Summary shows combined progress toward your goals. Tap these areas to open their detailed screens.

Recent Transactions

Recent Transactions shows records for the selected month, giving you a quick way to verify recent money activity.

4. Managing Accounts

Accounts represent where your money is held or tracked.

Add an account

  1. Tap Accounts in the bottom navigation.
  2. Tap the + button.
  3. Enter an Account Name, for example SBI Bank, Cash or Paytm.
  4. Choose the Account Type.
  5. Enter the Initial Balance.
  6. Optionally enable Make this the default account.
  7. Tap Save Account.
Default Account  The default account is preselected when you create new income or expense transactions, reducing repetitive taps.

Edit, view or archive an account

From Accounts, tap an account to view its details. Use the edit icon to change editable account information. Use the more-options menu for account actions such as archiving. Archived accounts can be opened from the archive icon in the Accounts screen.

Balance rule  Current Balance is updated automatically through transactions. This is why the balance field is read-only when editing an existing account.

5. Recording Income, Expenses, Investments & Transfers

The Records area is the transaction center of BudgetWise. The Add Transaction screen currently supports four transaction types.

TypeUse it forEffect
IncomeSalary, refund, interest or other money receivedAdds money to the selected account
ExpenseFood, rent, shopping, bills, Fuel, and any other spendingDeducts money from the selected account
InvestmentMoving money into an investment accountDeducts from the source and credits the investment destination
TransferMoving money between your own accountsMoves money between accounts without treating it as normal income/expense
AdjustmentRecord any entry to adjust balance of account without impacting income or expense.
(Example: Cash account shows 5000, while you have cash in hand 6000 then add adjustment entry to add 1000 with increase in Cash account)
Add/Deduct money in selected account without impacting Income/Expense.

Add a transaction

  1. Open Records, or use Income/Expense from Home Quick Actions.
  2. Choose the Transaction Type.
  3. Enter the amount and the transaction details shown on the form.
  4. Select the source Account.
  5. For Income or Expense, choose the relevant Category when required.
  6. For Investment or Transfer, select the destination account when the app asks for it.
  7. Check the transaction date and other details.
  8. Tap Save Transaction.
Investment vs Expense  Use Investment when money is being moved into an investment destination and you do not want it counted as everyday spending. Use Expense when money is actually being spent.

6. Managing Categories

Categories make reports and budgets meaningful by grouping similar transactions.

  1. Open Profile.
  2. Tap Manage Categories.
  3. Add, edit or remove your income and expense categories as needed.

Use clear categories such as Groceries, Dining, Fuel, Rent, Salary or Freelance Income. Avoid creating multiple categories that mean almost the same thing unless you genuinely want them reported separately.

7. Creating & Managing Budgets

Budgets let you define how much you plan to spend for an expense category during a selected period.

Create a budget

  1. From Home, tap Budget, or open the Budgets screen through the app.
  2. Tap + to add a budget.
  3. Select an Expense Category.
  4. Enter the Budget Limit.
  5. Choose the Start Date and End Date.
  6. Save the budget.

The Budgets screen shows Total Budget, Spent and Remaining amounts for the selected month. Existing expense transactions within the budget period contribute to spending progress.

Useful habit  Create budgets for categories where overspending is easiest—such as dining, shopping, entertainment or discretionary travel—rather than budgeting every category on day one.

8. Setting Financial Goals

BudgetWise supports two goal styles.

Savings Goal

Use a Savings Goal when you want to manually track progress toward something such as an emergency fund, trip, gadget or down payment. You can use Add Money on the goal to increase the saved amount.

Account Goal

Use an Account Goal when the goal should follow the balance of a selected account automatically. For example, you can set a target for a dedicated emergency-fund account.

Create a goal

  1. Open Goals from Home.
  2. Tap +.
  3. Choose Savings Goal or Account Goal.
  4. Enter the Goal Title or Goal Name.
  5. For an Account Goal, select the account to track.
  6. Enter the Target Amount.
  7. For a Savings Goal, enter Already Saved if applicable.
  8. Choose the Target Date.
  9. Save the goal.
Goal achieved  When a savings goal reaches its target through Add Money, BudgetWise can show a goal-completion celebration.

9. Recurring Budgets & Transactions

Recurring features are useful for predictable financial activity such as EMIs, subscriptions, salary, savings contributions or repeating budgets.

  1. Open Profile.
  2. Tap Recurring Budgets & Transactions.
  3. Choose the Budgets or Transactions tab.
  4. Tap Add Budget or Add Transaction.
  5. Configure the amount, recurrence and next date requested by the form.
  6. Save the recurring item.

Recurring items can be edited, activated/deactivated, or deleted from the recurring screen. The app processes recurring items when an authenticated session loads the main app.

Check dates  For recurring items, review the next due/run date after creation so the first occurrence happens when you expect.

10. Reports & Insights

Reports turn your transaction history into a clearer picture of where your money comes from, where it goes and how your plans are progressing.

Report tabs

Filters

Use the report filters to narrow the data you are analyzing. Available filters and transaction types adapt to the report tab so that, for example, Spending remains expense-focused and Investment remains investment-focused.

Export a report

  1. Open Reports.
  2. Apply the filters you want represented in the report.
  3. Tap the Export report icon.
  4. Choose Export CSV, Export PDF, Print PDF or the available PDF email/share action.
Before sharing  Review the selected month, type and other filters before exporting. A report is most useful when the recipient understands the period and scope it represents.

11. Voice Entry

Add with Voice is available from Home for quicker transaction entry.

  1. On Home, tap Add with Voice.
  2. Allow microphone access when Android asks for permission.
  3. Speak the transaction naturally and clearly.
  4. Review the information BudgetWise has prepared.
  5. Correct any details that need adjustment before saving.
Always review  Voice entry is a convenience feature. Check the amount, transaction type, account, category and date before you save the final record.

12. Backup & Restore

BudgetWise includes an in-app backup and restore workflow.

Create a backup

  1. Open Profile → Backup & Restore.
  2. Choose Save to Device to create a local backup, or Share Backup to send/store a copy elsewhere.
  3. Keep the backup file in a location you control and can find later.

Restore a backup

  1. Open Profile → Backup & Restore.
  2. Tap Select Backup File.
  3. Choose the BudgetWise backup file.
  4. Review the restore preview.
  5. Confirm Restore data only when you are sure.
Warning  Restoring replaces your current BudgetWise data with the selected backup. The app explicitly warns that this cannot be undone from inside BudgetWise.

13. App Lock, Privacy & Profile

App Lock

  1. Open Profile.
  2. Turn on App Lock.
  3. Authenticate using the device method supported by your phone.

The App Lock screen describes support through device authentication such as Face ID/biometrics, fingerprint, PIN, pattern or password, depending on what your device provides.

15. Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my account balance change?

Account balances are updated through transactions. Income increases the selected account, expenses reduce it, and investment/transfer flows can move money between accounts.

Why can't I edit the balance of an existing account?

BudgetWise keeps existing balances transaction-driven. The edit screen therefore shows Current Balance as read-only.

Does an investment count as an expense?

BudgetWise has a separate Investment transaction type so investment movements can be analyzed separately from normal expenses.

What is the difference between a Savings Goal and an Account Goal?

A Savings Goal is progressed manually using Add Money. An Account Goal follows the balance of the linked account.

Where do I find recurring transactions?

Open Profile → Recurring Budgets & Transactions.

How do I hide money values on Home?

Use the eye control on Current Balance. The dashboard hides/reveals financial values accordingly.

Can I export my reports?

Yes. The Reports screen provides CSV, PDF, print and PDF email/share options.

Can I back up my data?

Yes. Open Profile → Backup & Restore and use Save to Device or Share Backup.

What happens when I restore a backup?

Your current BudgetWise data is replaced by the selected backup after preview and confirmation.

Where can I get help?

Open Profile → Frequently Asked Questions or Contact Us.
